• The type of grant: Organization Grant -Student Achievement Grant. It is to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s). The proposed work should engage students in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.
• Name of Grant: NEA Student Achievement Grant
• Amount available: $5,000
• Type of form needed: Registration is online.
• Time frame of submission: none
• To what kinds of things do they normally award money: Any materials that apply to the requirements of the specified project
What kinds of things are NOT covered by this grant: • pay indirect costs, grant administration fees, or salaries; pay stipends to the applicants; support conference fees for more than one person; lobby or support religious purposes

This is something that I would apply to as an educator because of its broad requirements for qualification. If written correctly, the money could be used to start a music program at a school that does not have one. The grant does require a partner to be involved in the project and the money is taxable income.

2. http://www.ing-usa.com/us/aboutING/CorporateCitizenship/Education/INGUnsungHeroes/index.htm

• The type of grant: Sponsored by Private Business
• Name of Grant: ING Unsung Heroes®
• Amount available: One Hundred $2,000 awards. Three of those are chosen to receive the top awards of an additional $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.
• Type of form needed: Registration must be downloaded online, printed and mailed out with a brief description of your project
• Time frame of submission: Application Postmark Deadline: April 30, 2010
• To what kinds of things do they normally award money: Any materials that would help a creative, unique educational program that is helping students reach new heights.
• What kinds of things are NOT covered by this grant: Indirect costs or administrative fees will not be paid or withheld from the grant award.

I like this grant because of the possibility of receiving $25,000 if your project is better than the rest of the competing applicants, and the application does not look too complicated. The advisory board is consisted of fellow teachers and administrators.

3. http://www.ascd.org/programs/Outstanding_Young_Educator_Award/Outstanding_Young_Educator_Award_Program.aspx

• The type of grant: Sponsored by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)
• Name of Grant: Outstanding Young Educator Award
• Amount available: $10,000
• Type of form needed: The applicant must be nominated by another teacher. A commitment to educating the whole the Whole Child standards.
• Closing date for the 2011 OYEA nominations : 08/01/2010
• To what kinds of things do they normally award money: Anything that you would like

1) Website name: Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (http://www.mhopus.org/teachers.asp)

Type: K-12 Instrumental Progams

Name: Mr. Holland's Opus Grant

Amount: No more than $10,000

Form: Pre-form consists of basic info, a paragraph on what the money would be used for, and a log of your school's music expenses.

Deadline: December 1, 2009

Money uses available: Musical instruments.

I would definitely apply for this scholarship. The criteria are not very strict aside from you need to be at least 3 years old and instrumental only. $10,000 would be amazing!

2)National Music Foundation (http://www.usamusic.org/amei.html)

Type: Private

Name: Lois Bailey Glenn awards

Amount available: $1,000

Form needed: Submit an American music Lesson Plan

Deadline: December 29

Money purpose: For teachers who send in strong American-music themed lesson plans

I would probably apply for this one as well. It wouldn't be difficult to theme a lesson plan on American music, so why not?

3)Website: National Endowment for the arts (http://www.nea.gov/grants/apply/Artsed.html)

Type of Grant: Private

Name: Access to Artistic Excellence

Amount: $5,000 - $150,000

Form needed: Basic application

Time Frame: August 13

Money purpose: To encourage and support artistic excellence, preserve our cultural heritage, and provide access to the arts for all Americans. Grants support projects that provide short-term arts exposure or arts appreciation for children and youth as well as intergenerational education projects.

Again, with the potential of getting $150,000, why would I not apply?!

THIS POST IS ALSO FOR WILL BROCKER! copyright 2009

1.) Website name: Education World
-Name of Grant: Access to Artistic Excellence
-Type: Arts
-Money available: $5,000-$150,000
-Type of form needed: private application
-Time Frame/Application Deadline: March 12, August 13, 2009
-Normal awards: short-term arts exposure or arts appreciation for children and youth as well as intergenerational education projects.
-Exceptions: Any programs that don't enhance the above.

http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/archives/grants.shtml

I would definitely apply for this grant as a music educator. This woulod be especially useful in many inner-city public schools that can't afford instruments, computers, or any other materials needed for arts, and specifically music education.

2.) Website Name: ASCAP Foundation
-Type of Grant: Arts exposure
-Name of grant: ManUp4Kids Program
-Money Available: $1500
-Type of Form needed: Private Application?
-Time Frame/App Deadline: Unable to tell from website
-Normal Awards: Forms of entertainment which would promote exposing low-income families to theatre, music, and other art disciplines
-Exceptions: Programs that are not arts-related

http://www.ascapfoundation.org/newgrants2009.html

Again, I would definitely use this grant as a music educator. This offers opportunities to families that would otherwise never have them, and really supports the notion that anyone should be able to access the arts.

3.) Website name: Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation
-Type of grant: Music/Arts
-Name of grant: Music Matters Grant
-Money available: $1,000-$12,000
-Type of form needed: Private app
-Time frame/App deadline: February 5, 2010
-Normal awards: programs serving students in grades K-12;programs involving innovative educational reform; programs serving economically disadvantaged children;programs having established collaborative partnerships with parent-teacher-student associations (PTSA) and other community groups;programs possibly including the basic need of music instruments and educational materials
-Exceptions: Individuals; Religious, political, labor, athletic, or fraternal organizations; Operating deficits or debt retirement; Music therapy and dance; General requests for operating funds or capital campaigns; Event sponsorships such as, but not limited to walks, runs, or golf tournaments; Programs serving people and communities outside the U.S.

http://heart.muzak.com/what/grants.aspx

Though I like and agree with the initial mission statement of this grant, I'm not so sure if I would use it as a music educator. It seems highly specific, and they seem as though they are unwilling to make certain accomodations for groups of people--seems a bit discriminatory.

National Endowment for The Arts-

American Master Pieces: Chamber Music from 5,000-75,000

Projects may be initiated by eligible organizations of all sizes, genres, and aesthetics such as:
• Ensembles.
• Presenters.
• Festivals.
• Colleges and universities.
• Meet the Arts Endowment's "Legal Requirements," including nonprofit, tax-exempt status, as detailed in the FY 2010 Grants for Arts Projects guidelines, at the time of application.
• Have a three-year history of programming that includes the production or presentation of chamber music performances and educational activities prior to the application deadline.
• Have submitted acceptable Final Report packages by the due date(s) for all Arts Endowment award(s) previously received.
Deadline: October 8, 2009

This is a very unique grant that focuses on chamber music. I would definitely like to use this grant to start an after school program or for chamber music for my advance players. This seems like a lot of work to apply for a grant but because it is so specific, I think it will be less competitive because it is very specific.

http://www.musiccenter.org/education/bravo.html

The BRAVO Award was established by the Music Center in 1983 to recognize teachers and schools for creativity, innovation and excellence in arts education.
The Bravo Award honors educators and schools for excellence in all arts disciplines. BRAVO Awards are presented in three categories; schools, arts specialist teacher, general classroom teacher. BRAVO Award winners use the arts to revitalize teaching, enhance academic achievement and foster self-esteem, teamwork and cross-cultural communication and understanding.

Nominees must submit a completed application which is then reviewed by a committee of educators, artists and arts specialists. A point ranking system is used to select the top tier of applicants. A panel of judges chooses applicants from each category and visits their classrooms and determines the BRAVO Award winners. Getting the word out about the value of arts education and spotlighting great educators is a large part of the BRAVO mission. We encourage every nominee to submit an application and be part of the recognition process!

Deadline Fectuary 4, 2009

Grant 1:
mockingbirdfoundation.org
Goal is to further music education in schools but also in other more unconventional places.
Mockingbird Foundation
Grants given are from $50.00 to $5,000
Must write a letter of inquiry and then be invited to apply.
Grants are awarded year round.
Grants generally go to schools but also to hospitals, shelters and foster homes to further music education.
Grants are not given to places that use music as a therapy.
This seems like an interesting grant and foundation, it is founded by the band Phish. But I do not think that I would apply for it, they do not accept many applicants and one cannot even apply unless invited to apply.

Grant 2:
target.com
Gives money to programs that supports music in schools. Also supports school tour groups.
Target Grants
$1000-$3000
Although too late to apply for a grant this year, application dates for 2010 will be available after March 1st.
Programs that make the arts accessible to school children are of particular interest to Target
They had no stipulations.
I would apply for this grant. It seems to be legitimate and I have heard of target's reputation as a quality company that is involved in the community.

Grant 3:

neh.org
Grant-making agency of the Government to support the humanities.
National Endowment for the Humanities
Could not find specific monetary values.
There were several grants on this site with many different log in dates.
There were many specific grants that went to specific places.
Each grant had its own guidlines.
There were many grants that I think would be useful and worthwhile to apply for.

Type of form needed- have been nominated by someone from our constantly changing pool of invited external nominators
Time frame for submission- The shortest possible interval from nomination to award is about nine months, but it normally takes more than a year, sometimes several.

Website name- Fund for Teachers
Type of grant- private

Must spend 50 percent of working time in the classroom
Teachers may budget up to $5,000 per individual and $10,000 per team
Teachers may only be awarded a FFT Fellowship once every five years
Time frame for submission- once a year
To what kinds of things do they normally award money (hardware, software, musical instruments, etc.)- grant money may not be used to purchase materials or fund experiences that are evidently inappropriate for the ages or abilities of a teacher's students. Generally speaking, anything else is possible, as long as it is part of a stimulating activity in which students are actively involved and which is an integral component of the curricular project or broader Instructional Strategy.

We would love to be nominated for any and all three of these grants/awards, especially the McArthur Fellowship. As a music educator, the McArthur would serve greatly as a source of instrumental purchases. As a matter of fact, because they don’t restrict the purchases for the money- you can buy whatever you feel is needed in the classroom. The Golden Apple award is also another great one that is specifically geared towards illinois educators.

Chicago Foundation for Education
Offers Small Grants ($500), Study Group Grants, Networking Leadership Grants, and Fund for Teachers Fellowships
Amounts range from $500 to $10,000
Need separate form for each grant offered, downloadable from cite
Also need proposal
Timeframe is different for all grants but the consider awards once a year.
Money is for CPS teachers/schools
Must be a certified Pre-K through 12th Grade Chicago Public School teacher
Must have a minimum of three years teaching experience
Must spend 50 percent of working time in the classroom
Teachers may budget up to $5,000 per individual and $10,000 per team
Teachers may only be awarded a FFT Fellowship once every five years
Money must be used for education, not for salaries, travel costs, conference fees, etc.

I might apply for this grant if I worked in CPS and had a specific project or proposal in mind. It also seems like teachers apply in groups for this grant, which might be difficult if I were the only music teacher in the school.

Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation
Three grant programs: Melody, Special Projects, and Michael Kamen Solo Award
Amounts range from $500 - $20,000
Need to create an online account to fill out an application, reviewed once a year
Requirements are different for each grant, but they will NOT give money to programs outside the US, for salaries or lessons, special events or camps

The three different grants help after school music programs, students who don’t own an instrument, and school day music programs. I would definitely apply for one of these grants. I also like the grant for helping kids buy their own instrument.

Fry Foundation
Website doesn’t say what amounts they grant
They grant specifically Education, Arts Education, Employment and Health, and there are very specific guidelines online for applying.
Arts Education guidelines focus specifically on CPS, low income demographics.
They look for teacher-training programs that immerse educators in the practice and study of the arts and present teachers with innovative strategies for teaching the arts, engaging students in the creative process, and assessing student progress. We look for programs that provide ongoing support, expertise and resources to both teachers and students.
They do not fund to individuals, government entities, general operating, political activities, medical research, or religious purposes.

I would definitely apply for a grant from this foundation, especially if I had a specific project in mind.

Music Education for Children
The Mockingbird Foundation Grant
$50.00 – $5,000.00
Letter of inquiry and proposal
Inquiry Proposals Funding
September 1 November 1 January 1
February 1 April 1 June 1

Projects for children 18 years and younger that foster creative expression through music, utilizing resources including instruments, texts, office materials, practice/performance space, instruction, and have a particular interest in low income, low skill level groups.

Mockingbird is particularly interested in projects that foster self-esteem and free expression, but does not typically fund music therapy which is not education or music appreciation which does not include participation.

I would apply for this grant if I were in a public school and had plans to do a project involving cross-discipline activities, or a unit that explored music from other cultures. I believe this would also be a good source of funding for an after school music program in a lower income neighborhood. I would not apply for this grant if I did not have a specific project in mind, or if I were teaching at a school with a religious affiliation.

mhopus.org
Helps K-12 school instrumental music programs that take place during the regular school day.
Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation
Up to $10,000 for project grants and $20,000 for individual instrument grants
Pre-qualification form, followed by proposal
Pre-qualification form only available until December 1st. You will be notified by the MHOF Program Director whether or not your program may submit a full application within two weeks of submitting the Pre-Qualification Form. Awarded programs will receive instruments during Summer 2010.

Special projects programs, which are basically before and after school programs. They also award up to $20,000 toward a new instrument for eligible students who have studied for five years or more.

If your school offers Orff/classroom music only, it is NOT eligible to apply.
Programs outside the United States, Teacher salaries or music lessons, Programs or individuals outside of our three programs, Events, concerts, festivals, Summer camps.

I would apply for this grant if I were in a school where the band/orchestra program had potential for growth, but limited funding. It would be a great grant to receive if you had space for an instrumental program, but needed more funding.

www.targetfieldtripgrants.target.com
Target field trip grant administered by Scholarship America
Target Store Arts Grant
Up to $800
Online application including Applicant's description of the field trip and its objectives. Including benefits to the students, including overall student learning experience, relevance to curriculum, number of students who may benefit from the grant, and proposed use of funds.
Applications must be submitted electronically to Scholarship America between August 5, and November 3

This is a grant specifically designed to fund field trips. They will give money to 501(c)(3) or 509(a)(1) tax-exempt schools or organizations with educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals or classified staff who are willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students.

Parents, Volunteers, Childcare centers, After-school programs, Pre-K groups

I would apply for this grant as a music educator. Field trips are a great way share life-size music experiences with students. This grant would be really helpful in a school with low-income families who could not otherwise send their student on a costly field trip. You could also use this grant to supplement certain grades that are working on special projects or units in conjunction with other grants.

Yes, I would definitely be attracted to apply for a grant through this foundation. The scope seems wide enough.

Website name:http://arts.endow.gov/grants/apply/AMchamber.html

This also looks very appleaing, as it is geared for music in school.

What kinds of things are NOT covered by this grant.

This is worth checking out. The fund aims at closing gaps of resource disparities between schools. While it doesn’t talk about music specifically, I think they would be sympathetic to music programs that don’t have enough instruments or technology.

This would be a good grant to apply for. In October 2008, the grant gave away $100,000 to 32 music programs. Most of the recipients were elementary schools. The grant was founded on the belief that through music education, a child can better realize his or her full potential and better develop his or her character.
